Young Makers Studio Apprenticeships
For ages 15–17 ready to deepen their craft practice, build studio leadership skills, and learn alongside BCC teaching artists.
The Young Makers Studio Apprenticeship is an advanced learning and leadership opportunity for teens who have already completed a BCC class and are ready to take the next step in clay, wood, or metal.
Explore Youth Classes and Programs
No prior experience is needed for most youth classes—just curiosity and a willingness to make something new.
Clay Apprentice
Develop your ceramic practice while learning studio systems, tool care, material preparation, cleanup, and the rhythms of a working teaching studio.
Build woodworking and woodturning skills while learning safe tool use, material preparation, shop organization, and thoughtful studio habits.
Metal Apprentice
Deepen your metalsmithing skills through studio work, tool care, and project support. Forge opportunities are available to approved apprentices age 15 and up.
More Than a Class
Apprentices receive meaningful mentorship and real access to the BCC studio community while learning how a professional craft studio works.
- Individual mentorship from a BCC teaching artist
- Tuition-free access to BCC classes with available space during the six-month term
- One adult-class apprenticeship with their mentor teacher
- Hands-on studio leadership and teaching-assistant experience
- A completion certificate and reference for future educational or employment opportunities
- A supportive community of fellow makers
What Apprentices Do
Apprentices work alongside the teaching artist as active studio assistants. Depending on their training and experience, they may help welcome and orient students, demonstrate appropriate studio habits, guide younger makers through teacher-directed tasks, support tool use and project work, prepare materials, assist with transitions and bathroom breaks, and help maintain a safe, focused, and respectful learning environment.
Apprentices work under the direction of the teaching artist and do not replace the instructor or required adult staffing.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
Applicants must be ages 15–17, have completed at least one prior BCC class in their chosen studio, and be able to commit to the full six-month term.
